Indigenous Territories & Cultural Respect

Honouring the Lands and Peoples of Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is home to over 50 distinct First Nations, each with their own languages, governance systems, and cultural traditions. These Nations belong to three primary cultural and linguistic families:
Coast Salish Peoples – including Nations such as the Songhees, Esquimalt, Tsartlip, Tsawout, Snuneymuxw, and others in the southeastern and eastern regions.
Nuu-chah-nulth Peoples – including the Tla-o-qui-aht, Ahousaht, Huu-ay-aht, and others along the west coast.
Kwakwaka’wakw Peoples – including the Kwakiutl, 'Namgis, Mamalilikulla, and others in the northern and northeastern regions.
These lands are unceded, meaning they were never surrendered or signed away through treaties. Indigenous Peoples have maintained a continuous and profound relationship with these territories since time immemorial.
