Beaches are meant to be spaces of freedom where people of all identities and backgrounds can relax, swim, and be themselves. Although all public beaches are open to everyone, not all of them feel equally welcoming. For many 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, especially trans, non-binary, or queer people of color, a sense of safety and comfort in outdoor spaces often depends on the community around them. On Vancouver Island, this feeling of welcome is strongest in places where diversity is visible, kindness is the norm, and people of all genders and orientations can show up fully as themselves.
