Telegraph Cove is the home of Whale Interpretive Center. While you are enjoying Telegraph Cove whale watching, you may have the chance to see a spectacular collection of marine mammal skeletons. Besides whales, other creatures such as bears, eagles, sea lions and porpoises are observable. The best season for whale watching in Telegraph Cove may be from Mid-June through October.
Telegraph Cove, located on the eastern coast of Northern Vancouver Island, is accessible from Port McNeill via a 26 km (16 miles) drive. Turning from Island Highway to Beaver Cove Road, the Telegraph Cove is 200 km (124 miles) north of Campbell River city.
Residents and transients Orcas:
There are approximately 80 orca whales residing around Northern Vancouver Island. Therefore, fewer Resident Orcas are near the north compared to southern Vancouver Island, with around 220 orcas. There are also about 260 transient orcas around the northern part of the island. Their length varies from 12-16 meters (39-52 ft). Male orcas have between 3,600-5,400 kg (7936-11905 pounds) and females between 1,400-2,700 kg (3086-5952 pounds) weight. These types of whales are known mainly for their sounds and breaches.
