Nanaimo had the 12th most donors per capita on GoFundMe in 2025 compared with other Canadian communities. In a GoFundMe [https://www.gofundme.com/]press release issued last month, B.C. communities held the top three spots, Victoria holding the lead, with an average of one in five Victorians contributing to a GoFundMe campaign last year, followed by North Vancouver in second and Vancouver in third. Also ranking high was New Westminster in fifth, Kamloops in sixth, Port Coquitlam in ninth and Kelowna in 10th. GoFundMe is a crowd-funding website, where users can open a page to allow people to donate to a specific goal or cause so long as it falls within community guidelines. These can include medical bills, re-building a life after a fire or pet expenses. “Every donation is powered by a deeply human story. We see it in a neighborhood rallying to save a beloved children’s bookstore or a community uniting to keep a local farm open and its animals cared for,” said Tim Cadogan, GoFundMe CEO in a press release. “This year’s top communities showcase the very best of us; they prove that help is inherently human, with friends uniting, strangers stepping in, and entire cities answering the call.” This year, GoFundMe’s Top 20 “most generous communities in Canada” are: 1. Victoria, British Columbia 2. North Vancouver, British Columbia 3. Vancouver, British Columbia 4. St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador 5. New Westminster, British Columbia 6.
