Work is underway at the Orca Place supportive housing facility in Parksville to add three new living units. The three new studio units will have private washrooms and kitchenettes, according to Island Crisis Care Society, which operates the building constructed by BC Housing and located on city-owned land. In order to free up the space, scooter and bicycle storage will be relocated to a new building, and Parksville council approved the development permit during its Jan. 19 meeting. “I believe staff was working long and hard with BC Housing to get this to happen, so I just wanted to have a quick shoutout to staff for getting this done,” Coun. Sean Wood said. Once the renovations are complete, it will bring the total number of homes to 55, according to ICCS. The new units are expected to open in the fall. Orca Place opened in 2019 and provides housing, support, and programs to residents who have been assessed and recommended by the local Housing and Outreach Support Team.
