It has been a hot and dry start to the summer season! You may have heard on the news that there are a significant number of wildfires in the Vancouver Island Region. While there are wildfires on the Island and in BC, the Vancouver Island Region is open for travel and the fires, though serious, are smaller in scale. We did want to mention that unfortunately all of the fires on Vancouver Island are suspected to be human-caused, and would like to take this time to remind you to be Fire Smart on your travels. Always check Drive BC and the BC Wildfire Service map before you head out. BC Wildfire Resources Alerts & Bulletins from Emergency Info BC Below are a few tips on how to be Fire Smart: * Respect the Coastal Fire Ban by all means. No open fires are permitted on Vancouver Island. * If you see someone disobeying the ban, call it in to 250-951-4209 or *5555 on your cell. * If you see signs of a fire, dial *5555 on your cell. * Hold onto your butts! Cigarette butts are a leading cause of wildfires. Please use an ashtray, make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished, and dispose of the remnants properly. * Avoid using all-terrain vehicles (ATV) and power tools in off road areas. * Fireworks can easily spark a fire. It is smart to avoid using fireworks during the fire ban. Plan, prepare, stay informed: * Wildfires can be unpredictable. Have a plan, be prepared, and stay informed. * Always leave a trip plan with at least two people. * Pack extra water and snacks in your car and on your travels. * Obey restrictions and authorities. Learn More from Adventure Smart BC Best Practices From the Don’t Love it to Death Campaign The province provided an update on the wildfire and drought situation across B.C. on Tuesday, July 18 as Vancouver Island reached drought level 5, the most severe level on the scale.
