The 2025 Silly Boat Regatta

Dive into the Whimsy

Imagine a flotilla of boats crafted from recycled materials—some resembling dragons, others shaped like giant rubber ducks—racing across the harbour, their crews clad in outlandish costumes, all in the name of charity. This is the essence of the Silly Boat Regatta, a uniquely Nanaimo event that combines creativity, community spirit, and a dash of the absurd. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Maffeo Sutton Park, this annual spectacle is more than just a race; it's a celebration of ingenuity and goodwill that draws thousands each year.

Event Overview

Date: Sunday, July 20, 2025
Time: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: Maffeo Sutton Park, 100 Comox Road, Nanaimo, BC
Admission: Free

The Silly Boat Regatta is the flagship fundraising event for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre (NCDC), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth with developmental needs in Central Vancouver Island since 1967. Funds raised during the event help provide essential programs, services, and therapeutic equipment for over 1,900 children and their families annually.

What to Expect

At 8:00 AM, teams gather to construct their vessels using recycled or recyclable materials. The rules are simple: boats must be built on-site, capable of floating (at least momentarily), and hold at least two people. No motors are allowed—only human or wind power.
From 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the Pavilion Stage area comes alive with dancers, performers, crafts, and educational booths from community organizations. It's a family-friendly atmosphere with something for all ages.
The first race kicks off at 1:00 PM, with the grand championship race scheduled for 3:00 PM. Approximately 40 teams will navigate their handmade boats around a buoy in the inner harbour and back to shore, all vying for glory in categories like "Silliest Boat," "Silliest Sailors," and "First to Sink."
