Trust Fall

An Exhibition of Trust, Mistakes, and Creative Miscommunication

What happens when you let go of control and trust the creative process—mistakes and all? Trust Fall, the latest exhibition at Nanaimo Art Gallery, answers that question with a playful twist. Inspired by the classic team-building exercise where you fall backward, hoping someone catches you, this show explores how miscommunication and unexpected outcomes can lead to brilliant art. Featuring works by Victoria-based artist Laura Gildner and Toronto’s Jon Sasaki, Trust Fall invites you to embrace the unpredictable. From origami folded via phone instructions to art shaped by psychic collaboration, this exhibition celebrates the beauty in creative chaos. Don’t miss the opening reception on January 31, 2025, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM—your chance to meet the artists and dive into their world of trust and transformation!

Curated by Jesse Birch, Trust Fall explores the question: How can we play together through trust and mistakes? Laura Gildner’s work takes you on a wild ride—starting with a failed bid on Patrick Swayze’s molar, she collaborated with a biotech lab, a psychic medium, and even Swayze’s ghost to create LOVECHILD, a surreal new installation. Her video piece MEN (2017) features unscripted auditions from men who brought their own flair, no direction required.
Jon Sasaki, on the other hand, reimagines Nanaimo’s bathtub racing tradition with an ofuro (Japanese bath) design, tying into the region’s Japanese Canadian history. His Misconstructions (2022), made with Baco Ohama during the pandemic, transforms audio-only origami instructions into charming mistakes. As Sasaki puts it, “The results may not have been as intended, but they are delightful nevertheless.” Even a curatorial error—a misread photo of a guitar—became part of the art, showing how mishaps can turn into meaning. Running from February 1 to April 13, 2025, Trust Fall proves creativity thrives in the unexpected.
