The Port Alberni Salmon Festival & Derby is more than just a fishing event—it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and the timeless connection between people and the wild waters that sustain them. Each year, over 1,500 anglers converge here, drawn by the thrill of the catch and the promise of unforgettable experiences. Here, friendships are forged on sunlit docks, stories are shared over fresh-caught salmon dinners, and the thrill of the catch becomes a memory etched forever. Whether you come to cast a line, cheer from the shore, or simply soak in the vibrant spirit, this festival invites you to be part of something truly special—a moment where nature and culture flow together in perfect harmony.

The Salmon Derby: A Tradition of Triumph

At the heart of the festival lies the renowned Salmon Derby, a three-day fishing competition that attracts participants from across the region. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Alberni Inlet, anglers vie for the coveted grand prize of $15,000, awarded to the largest salmon caught during the event. Daily cash prizes of $5,000, $2,000, and $1,000 are also up for grabs, along with hidden cash draws to keep the excitement flowing.

$50 per rod (one fishing prize per derby ticket)

Weigh-In Stations

Main station at Tyee Landing; additional stations at China Creek Marina, Poett Nook Marina, Upnit Lodge, and Bamfield (hidden draw eligibility only)

Fishing Boundaries

From the Beacon at the Somass River mouth to a line drawn from Cape Beale to Amphitrite Point

Rules

DFO regulations apply; fish must be weighed the same day at official weigh-in stations
