Barkley Sound, located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is one of the most visited whale watching locations in British Columbia. Barkley Sound Whale Watching is one of the growing destinations in the Ucluelet area.
The Barkley Sound is reachable down Alberni Inlet and is south of Ucluelet and north of Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island. From Port Alberni, there is a route named MV Frances Barkley, leading to Bamfield and Ucluelet's fishing ports, passing through the Broken Group Islands.
Orcas or killer whales:
Over the past 45 years, scientists have analyzed Killer Whales extensively.
By 1976, it was illegal to kill or capture orca in BC, and they have been protected ever since. After decades of close observation and research, humans realize the importance of killer whales as a means of tourism attraction. Killer whales live in matriarchal societies or pods led by the pod's eldest female, the matriarch. Orcas have a different type of experience in their surroundings. Orcas rely on an acoustic environment and thrive underwater.
