"Common Threads: How the Land and Sea Has Survived and Thrived" is a captivating exhibition that showcases the artistic journey of Joyce McLellan. Drawing inspiration from her Indigenous heritage and deep connection to nature, Joyce presents a collection of quilts, textiles, felting, natural dyeing, and textile painting. Each piece reflects her understanding of the natural world and the knowledge gained through lived experience.
Born and raised on the waterfront within Tsleil-Waututh Nation territory, Joyce's childhood was profoundly influenced by the teachings of her grandfather, Chief Dan George. These early experiences instilled in her a lifelong appreciation for the ocean and its role in the circle of life. Even during her 25 years in Ontario, Joyce remained connected to the land, mountains, and ocean, choosing a country lifestyle to raise her family. Upon returning to B.C., she reconnected with her extended family and continued her artistic endeavors, focusing on quilting and other art forms.
