Active Pass Lighthouse on Vancouver Island

Nestled on the picturesque Mayne Island in British Columbia’s Gulf Islands, Active Pass Lighthouse is a historic beacon guiding mariners since 1885. Renowned for its dramatic coastal vistas and rich maritime heritage, this iconic lighthouse marks the eastern entrance to  Active Pass, a bustling shipping channel between the Salish Sea and the Strait of Georgia. Surrounded by rugged cliffs and evergreen forests, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of passing ferries, orcas, and seabirds. Located just a short ferry ride from Vancouver Island, it’s a hidden gem for history buffs, photographers, and nature lovers. Discover how to explore this heritage site, its accessibility from Victoria and Nanaimo, and tips for capturing its timeless charm.

Why Visit Active Pass Lighthouse? History & Significance

Built in 1885, Active Pass Lighthouse was instrumental in guiding ships through the narrow, treacherous Active Pass, named after the USS Active, a 19th-century survey ship. This light house has made it easier and safer for marine traffic to travel between Victoria and Vancouver.
The original wooden structure was replaced in 1969 with an automated tower, but its legacy lives on. Designated a Heritage Lighthouse in 2015, it’s a testament to Canada’s maritime history. Visitors can explore the keeper’s cottage (now a museum) and learn about the lives of lighthouse keepers through interpretive panels.
